📏 Making Comparisons in Korean (더, 보다)

Want to say something is *more* beautiful, *faster*, or *taller* in Korean? You’ll use two important words: 더 (more) and 보다 (than).
🔑 Structure 1: [A]보다 [B]가 더 ~
This is the most common sentence structure:
A보다 B가 더 + adjective
Korean | English |
---|---|
커피보다 차가 더 맛있어요. | Tea is tastier than coffee. |
서울보다 부산이 더 따뜻해요. | Busan is warmer than Seoul. |
💡 보다 attaches directly to the noun being compared. It means “than.”
더 means “more.” It goes before the adjective.
🧾 Structure 2: 더 + adjective + noun
Another way to use 더 is before a noun:
Korean | English |
---|---|
더 예쁜 옷 | more beautiful clothes |
더 빠른 방법 | a faster method |
This is useful when describing items or choosing between two options.
⚖️ What if things are equal?
If you want to say two things are *similar*, use:
- 같다: to be the same
- 비슷하다: to be similar
Korean | English |
---|---|
이거랑 저거랑 같아요. | This and that are the same. |
제 친구와 저는 성격이 비슷해요. | My friend and I have similar personalities. |
💬 Practice Sentences
