📏 Making Comparisons in Korean (더, 보다)

Making Comparisons in Korean (더, 보다)

Want to say something is *more* beautiful, *faster*, or *taller* in Korean? You’ll use two important words: 더 (more) and 보다 (than).

🔑 Structure 1: [A]보다 [B]가 더 ~

This is the most common sentence structure:

A보다 B가 더 + adjective

Korean English
커피보다 차가 더 맛있어요. Tea is tastier than coffee.
서울보다 부산이 더 따뜻해요. Busan is warmer than Seoul.

💡 보다 attaches directly to the noun being compared. It means “than.”
means “more.” It goes before the adjective.

🧾 Structure 2: 더 + adjective + noun

Another way to use 더 is before a noun:

Korean English
더 예쁜 옷 more beautiful clothes
더 빠른 방법 a faster method

This is useful when describing items or choosing between two options.

⚖️ What if things are equal?

If you want to say two things are *similar*, use:

  • 같다: to be the same
  • 비슷하다: to be similar
Korean English
이거랑 저거랑 같아요. This and that are the same.
제 친구와 저는 성격이 비슷해요. My friend and I have similar personalities.

💬 Practice Sentences

  • 고양이보다 개를 더 좋아해요.
  • 이 식당이 저 식당보다 더 싸요.
  • 주말보다 평일에 사람이 더 많아요.
