🎉 Talking About Your Weekend Plans – Intermediate Level (TOPIK 3–4)
🗓️ TGIF: How to Talk About Your Weekend Plans Naturally
Ready for the weekend? Whether you're hiking or hitting a cafe, Teacher Hoon breaks down the Future Intention patterns to make you sound like a fluent speaker.
The Most Common Icebreaker (EEAT Tip)
In Korea, "What are you doing this weekend?" is the universal Friday conversation starter. As a teacher with 20 years of experience, I always remind students: Don't just use future tense. Using patterns that show "intention" makes you sound much more engaged in the conversation. Let's look at the key toolkit for TOPIK 3-4.

1. Intent: -(으)하려고 해요
Use this when you have a Goal or Thinking Process behind your plan. It translates to "I'm planning to..."
(I'm planning to go hiking on the weekend.) - 🤝
(I'm planning to meet a friend.)
2. Future: -(으)ㄹ 거예요
Use this for Scheduled or Definite future actions. It's the standard "I will..." form.
(I will rest well at home.) - 🛍️
(I am going to go shopping.)
💡 Teacher Hoon's Pro Distinction Tip
Many students ask: "Can I use both?" Yes! But if someone asks you "뭐 할 거예요?", answering with "-(으)려고 해요" sounds more like you've been putting effort into your planning. It's a great way to show enthusiasm!
🗣 Practice Dialogue: The Beach Trip
(What will you do this weekend?)
(I'm going to the beach. I'm planning to swim and take photos.)
(Wow, sounds like fun!)
💡 Did You Know? The "2-Hour" Rule
According to 2024 travel data, over 70% of Koreans prefer weekend trips within 2 hours of their home, like Gangneung, Gapyeong, or Sokcho. This is why Sunday evening traffic on the highways is legendary! Many Koreans plan their weekend Gwi-seong (return) as early as Monday morning.
