Learn Hangul Online #4 — Batchim (Final Consonants)

Batchim simplifies to 7 base sounds. Add one easy rule—liaison—and real signs/menus start to click.

We’ll map each final shape to a base sound (k·n·t·l·m·p·ng), apply carry-over between blocks, and read real words in 2–5 minutes.

🎯 Learning Goals

  • Recognize the 7 base batchim outputs: k · n · t · l · m · p · ng
  • Use simple liaison when the next block starts with a vowel.

1) Batchim Basics — 7 Coda Sounds

Final consonants “simplify” to these outputs:

  • ㄱ/ㅋ/ㄲk (박 bak, 책 chaek)
  • n (산 san)
  • l (별 byeol)
  • m (밤 bam)
  • ㅂ/ㅍp (밥 bap)
  • ng (강 gang)
Don’t chase perfect English sounds.

2) Liaison (연음) Made Easy

When the next block starts with a vowel (often written with initial ㅇ), the final consonant carries over:

  • + → 바비 (ba-bi)
  • + → 오시/오치 느낌 (o-si / o-chi)
  • + → 가응에 느낌 (ga-ŋe)

Note: Double finals like 읽/앉 are advanced; master the 7 basics first.

3) Read Real Words (Menus & Signs)

Try first; then reveal reading + meaning.

밥 — bap — cooked rice/meal
김밥김밥 — gimbap — gimbap (kimbap)
옷가게옷가게 — written ot-gage, sounds like od-ga-ge (liaison) — clothing store
물병물병 — mul-byeongmul-byong — water bottle
책 — chaek — book
별 — byeol — star

4) Quick Quiz (Reveal)

Final sound of is? (s, t, or d)Answer: t (옷 → ot)
Liaison: + sounds like?Answer: 바비 (ba-bi)
Final sound of is?Answer: ng (gang)

❌ Common Mistakes (Beginners)

  • Reading base letters instead of base sounds. e.g., 옷 → ot, not os.
  • Forgetting liaison when next block begins with ㅇ.
  • Dragging ㄹ like English R/L. Keep it short: l.
  • Overthinking double finals early.
Fix fast: “touch & say” the last letter (k·n·t·l·m·p·ng), then read the whole word.

❓ FAQ (Beginner)

Q1. Why does ㅅ/ㅈ/ㅊ end as t?

A. In final position they neutralize to t.

Q2. Do I always link with liaison?

A. Link when the next block starts with a vowel (initial

Q3. ㄹ at the end—R or L? 받침 ㄹ은 R? L?

A. Short l sound.

Q4. Should I learn double finals now?

A. Not yet. Master the 7 outputs first.

✅ Your Turn: 3 Action Tasks

  1. 7-sound drill (3 min): 밥 산 옷 별 밤 밥 강 — point last letter and say p·n·t·l·m·p·ng.
  3. 20-sec recording: “밥이 맛있어요 / 옷이 예뻐요 / 별이 보여요.” Listen once; note the hardest word.

👩‍🏫 Teacher’s Tips

  • Touch the last letter, whisper the base sound, then read smoothly.
  • Short daily reps win. 2–5 minutes every day.

🌏 Did You Know?

Many Korean kids also learn with the same 7-sound batchim set—covering a huge chunk of daily words.

Keep exploring and build momentum day by day.
