Life Journey & Mentorship

When One Door Closes:
How italki Rewrote My 50s

An endless open road stretching toward distant snowy mountains

In the rigid structure of Korean society, success is often measured by collective standards. Losing my job in my 50s felt like being erased from the "mainstream." I felt as though I was fading away, becoming a person of the "periphery" in a culture that values youth and immediate utility.

[Linguistic Insight]
From the mainstream to the periphery
Practical working skills

🌪️ The Storm Before the Calm

At first, I was in denial. I felt anger toward a system that seemed to discard my decades of experience. Despite spending time walking in parks or reading favorite books, a sudden sense of anxiety about my responsibility as a breadwinner would often overwhelm me. In that silence, I looked inward and realized my true passion: giving a positive influence to others.

🎥 An Awkward Start on italki

I decided to become a Korean teacher—a natural choice given my childhood dream of teaching and my HR background. I filmed an awkward introduction video and prepared lesson plans. I will never forget my first hour. Even as a native speaker with English skills, teaching Korean in English was a daunting challenge.

🌏 Beyond Lessons: Global Friendships

I’ve created custom materials for students: from reading road signs for a trip to Jeju, to navigating Korean corporate culture. Now, I have friends in over a dozen countries—from the US and the UK to Japan and Vietnam. Language has become a bridge to their cultures.

🏠 Inviting the World to My Home

When my very first student visited Korea for their birthday, I invited them home. In Korea, inviting a "stranger" you've only met online is quite rare. But to me, they were true friends who listened to my story when I was struggling. We shared dinner and a small birthday celebration with my wife. It was a moment where sincerity transcended the limits of language.

A night to remember with a global friend

"A night to remember: My very first time inviting an international friend over to celebrate."

[Linguistic Insight]
True / Genuine friend
Precious connection / Tie

🌱 A Lifelong Mission of Gratitude

Today, I am back in a corporate role as an executive, but I will never stop teaching on italki. In 2026, I plan to take online courses for professional certification to give back even more. Life is unpredictable, but if you have a sincere heart, you can find wonderful friends regardless of religion or culture.

To My Students, Past and Future

Thank you for being part of my journey.
Let's continue to grow together, one word at a time. 🌿
