At first, I was in denial. I felt anger toward a system that seemed to discard my decades of experience. I decided to become a Korean teacher—a natural choice given my childhood dream of teaching and my HR background. I filmed an awkward introduction video and prepared lesson plans. I will never forget my first hour. Even as a native speaker with English skills, teaching Korean in English was a daunting challenge.

I’ve created custom materials for students: from reading road signs for a trip to Jeju, to navigating Korean corporate culture. Now, I have friends in over a dozen countries—from the US and the UK to Japan and Vietnam. Language has become a bridge to their cultures.

When my very first student visited Korea for their birthday, I invited them home. In Korea, inviting a "stranger" you've only met online is quite rare. But to me, they were true friends who listened to my story when I was struggling. We shared dinner and a small birthday celebration with my wife. It was a moment where sincerity transcended the limits of language.
