๐Ÿงฑ Korean Sentence Structure: SOV Basics for Beginners

Korean sentence structure

If you're an English speaker, Korean sentence structure may feel... reversed. ๐Ÿ˜ต

But don’t worry — once you get the pattern, it becomes second nature!

Korean follows a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order.
Let’s break it down with simple examples and tips to build strong, natural Korean sentences from Day 1. ๐Ÿ—️๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ“ What is SOV?

In English, we usually say:

I eat rice.
→ Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)

In Korean, it becomes:

I rice eat.
→ Subject + Object + Verb (SOV)

Example:
์ €๋Š” ๋ฐฅ์„ ๋จน์–ด์š”.
jeoneun babeul meogeoyo
→ I rice eat = I eat rice.

๐Ÿ“Œ The verb always goes last in Korean.

๐Ÿง‘‍๐Ÿซ Sentence Structure Elements

Here’s a basic template:

[Subject] + [Object] + [Verb]

ElementExampleKoreanMeaning
SubjectI์ €๋Š”jeoneun
Objectcoffee์ปคํ”ผ๋ฅผkeopireul
Verbdrink๋งˆ์…”์š”masyeoyo

✅ Final sentence:
์ €๋Š” ์ปคํ”ผ๋ฅผ ๋งˆ์…”์š”.
→ I drink coffee.

๐Ÿงฉ Example Sentences

  1. ์ €๋Š” ์ฑ…์„ ์ฝ์–ด์š”. → I read a book.

  2. ์นœ๊ตฌ๊ฐ€ ์˜ํ™”๋ฅผ ๋ด์š”. → A friend watches a movie.

  3. ์šฐ๋ฆฌ๋Š” ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด๋ฅผ ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•ด์š”. → We study Korean.

  4. ์—„๋งˆ๋Š” ๋ฐฅ์„ ๋งŒ๋“ค์–ด์š”. → Mom makes rice.

  5. ๊ณ ์–‘์ด๊ฐ€ ์ฐฝ๋ฌธ์„ ๋ด์š”. → The cat looks at the window.

๐Ÿ’กNote: Particles like ์€/๋Š”, ์ด/๊ฐ€, and ์„/๋ฅผ help identify each word’s role in the sentence. (See previous post!)

๐Ÿ” Can You Mix the Order?

In Korean, you can move words around for emphasis because particles show the function.

✅ Example:

  • ๋ฐฅ์„ ์ €๋Š” ๋จน์–ด์š”. (I eat rice.)

  • ์ €๋Š” ๋ฐฅ์„ ๋จน์–ด์š”.

  • ๋จน์–ด์š”, ์ €๋Š” ๋ฐฅ์„. (poetic/dramatic tone)

But for beginners, always stick to Subject + Object + Verb for clarity. ๐Ÿ› ️

๐Ÿ’ฌ Practice Tip

Start building your own sentences! Try this template:

์ €๋Š” [object]๋ฅผ [verb]์š”.

Examples:

  • ์ €๋Š” ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋ฅผ ๋จน์–ด์š”. (I eat an apple.)

  • ์ €๋Š” ์˜ํ™”๋ฅผ ๋ด์š”. (I watch a movie.)

  • ์ €๋Š” ์Œ์•…์„ ๋“ค์–ด์š”. (I listen to music.)

Say them aloud or write a mini diary using this structure. ✍️๐Ÿ““
