✍️ Master Hangul Writing: Stroke Order, Syllable Blocks & Mini Drills (Beginner)
Hangul (한글) is the starting line for Korean. This step-by-step guide shows you how to form letters correctly, build neat syllable blocks, and avoid common mistakes—so your writing becomes clear and confident.
이 글은 처음 배우는 학습자를 위해 획순·모음·자음 조합·연습을 단계별로 설명합니다.

🧭 Step 1–3: How Hangul Works
- Shapes = Sounds. Each letter has a shape tied to mouth position (consonants) or a line-dot system (vowels). 자음 모양은 발음 기관을 본뜸, 모음은 하늘(ㆍ)·땅(ㅡ)·사람(ㅣ) 철학에서 유래.
- Letters → Blocks. You don’t write in a straight line—you build square blocks (e.g., ㄱ + ㅏ → 가). 자모를 네모 칸에 조합.
- Blocks → Words. Spaces separate words (unlike some East Asian scripts). 한국어는 띄어쓰기를 합니다.
📏 Basic Stroke Rules (fast)
- Top → bottom, left → right. (예: ㅁ은 윗변→좌변→우변→아랫변)
- Verticals first for many vowels: ㅏ = ㅣ (down) + ─ (right tick).
- Keep proportions. Consonant sits balanced; vowel fills the side/bottom cleanly.
- Even spacing. Each block is a “square”—don’t squeeze or stretch.
Use grid paper or printable sheets to keep blocks aligned. 격자 노트/프린트물로 칸 정렬을 연습하세요.
🔤 Consonants & Vowels (quick tables)
| Consonants (기본 14) | RR | Hint |
|---|---|---|
| ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅅ | g/n/d/r/m/b/s | short, straight strokes; keep angles clean |
| ㅇ ㅈ ㅊ ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅎ | ng/j/ch/k/t/p/h | ㅇ is silent in onset, ng in coda |
| Vowels (기본 10) | RR | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅣ | a/ya/eo/yeo/i | vertical type (right-attached) |
| ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ | o/yo/u/yu/eu | horizontal type (bottom-attached) |
🧱 Build Syllable Blocks (C+V [+C])
Layouts you’ll use most:
- CV (right-vowel): ㄱ + ㅏ → 가
- CV (bottom-vowel): ㄱ + ㅗ → 고
- CVC (final consonant): 감, 곰, 갓
Final consonant (받침) sits at the bottom. Keep the block square. 받침은 아래에 단정히 배치.
📝 Mini Drills (1–2 min)
- Copy slowly (x2 lines each): 가 나 다 라 마 · 고 노 도 로 모
- Make 5 new blocks using ㅣ and ㅡ (e.g., 기, 니, 드, 르, 므).
- Dictation (listen to yourself): say “ra, ro, ru” and write 라·로·루. 소리 내며 쓰기.
- Spot the error: Which is wrong spacing? 가 나 vs 가나. Why?

4) 가 나 (two separate words) is fine if they are two words, but beginners often insert extra spaces inside one word. Keep blocks together when it’s a single word (e.g., 가나 = “Ghana”).
👩🏫 Teacher’s Tips
A steady rhythm prevents sloppy angles and shaky lines. 천천히 획수를 세며 쓰면 각도가 반듯해져요.
Whisper the sound (ga na da…) to connect shape ↔ sound. 모양과 소리를 동시에 연결.
Write 2 lines every day after brushing teeth—tiny, consistent wins. 매일 2줄—작은 습관이 실력을 만듭니다.
🌏 Did You Know? (Hangul Day)
Hangul Day is celebrated on October 9 in Korea to commemorate the proclamation of the script under King Sejong. Many educators praise Hangul’s logical design and learnability, which helps beginners gain reading ability quickly.
한글날(10월 9일)에는 한글의 가치와 배움의 즐거움을 기립니다.
📦 Final Thoughts & Next Steps
Master the rules + rhythm: top→bottom, left→right, square blocks, even spacing. Add 2 daily lines of practice—and review with mini drills.
Free practice idea: copy signboards you see in dramas or on maps (pause and write). 드라마 자막·간판을 멈춤하고 받아쓰기.
Keep going—your handwriting will look cleaner week by week.
