🎯 Mastering Korean Particles: 도, 만, 밖에 – Nuance and Usage
✨ Small Particles, Big Difference: Mastering 도, 만, and 밖에
In Korean, one tiny syllable can change your sentence from a flat fact to a rich expression of feeling. Teacher Hoon explains how to use 도 (also), 만 (only), and 밖에 (nothing but) like a local speaker.
Beyond Simple Translation (EEAT Tip)
Many students think 만 and 밖에 are interchangeable because they both mean "only." As a teacher with 20 years of experience, I share this secret: 만 is neutral, but 밖에 always carries a feeling of "not enough" or "limitation." Learning this nuance is the first step to sounding Intermediate (TOPIK 3-4). Let's break them down.

1. ➕ 도 (Also / Too)
Use 도 to add a noun to a list or to show inclusivity. Note that it replaces markers like 이/가 or 을/를.
- 🙋♂️ 저도 학생이에요. (I am a student, too.)
- 💧 물도 주세요. (Please give me water, also.)
- 📅 주말에도 일해요. (I work even on weekends.)
2. ➖ 만 (Only / Just)
만 focuses on one specific thing while excluding others. It is the standard, neutral way to say "only."
- ☕ 커피만 마셨어요. (I only drank coffee.)
- 🍎 사과만 샀어요. (I just bought apples.)
- 🕒 한 번만 더 말해 주세요. (Please say it just one more time.)
3. ❗ 밖에 (Nothing but / Only)
This particle is unique! It MUST be paired with a negative verb like 안, 못, or 없다. It expresses that the amount is smaller than expected.
- 🍚 밥밖에 없어요. (There is nothing but rice. / We only have rice left.)
- 🗣️ 한국어밖에 못해요. (I can only speak Korean. — Implies limited ability in others.)
- 💸 천 원밖에 안 남았어요. (I have nothing but 1,000 won left.)
💡 Teacher Hoon's Expert "Modesty" Tip
Koreans use 밖에 to be humble (겸손). Even if someone did a great job, they might say "조금밖에 못 했어요" (I could only do a little). This sounds much more polite and "Korean" than using 만. Master this to instantly boost your social intelligence in Korea!
