🎓 Learn Hangul Online #1: Why the Korean Alphabet Is Easy — Beginner (TOPIK 1–2)
🆕 Learn Hangul Online #1: Why the Korean Alphabet is the World's Most Logical Script
Master the "LEGO-like" Syllable Blocks in under 10 minutes.
Why Every Beginner Starts with "Blocks"
Unlike English, where letters are placed one after another in a single line (A-B-C), Hangul (the Korean alphabet) groups letters into clusters called Syllable Blocks. Think of it like a puzzle or LEGO bricks: you have pieces (consonants and vowels) that you snap together to create a single sound unit.
1. The Geometry of a Sound Block
Depending on the shape of the Vowel, the block is built either side-by-side or top-to-bottom. This is the part that usually surprises new learners!
📐 Vertical Vowels (ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅣ)
These stand tall. The consonant sits on the left, and the vowel on the right.
Example: ㄱ + ㅏ = 가 (ga)
📐 Horizontal Vowels (ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅡ)
These lie flat. The consonant sits on top, and the vowel on the bottom.
Example: ㄱ + ㅗ = 고 (go)
2. The Foundation: What is "Batchim"?
In more complex blocks, you can add a third (or even fourth) letter at the very bottom. This is called 받침 (Batchim), meaning "support" or "foundation."
- 공 (gong): ㄱ (Consonant) + ㅗ (Vowel) + ㅇ (Final Consonant / Batchim).
- 강 (gang): ㄱ + ㅏ + ㅇ. Notice how the 'ㅇ' always supports the letters above it.
3. Practice Table: Words You Already Know
The best way to learn is using Loanwords (Konglish). These are English words adopted into Korean phonetics.
| Korean Word | Breakdown | English Meaning |
|---|---|---|
