📝 TOPIK Starter Series #3: TOPIK II Essay Outline (Problem–Solution & Opinion)
Essays feel hard because they’re unstructured.
Give your writing a skeleton and it writes itself. Today you’ll learn two outlines you can reuse on almost any prompt—then plug in your ideas fast.
에세이가 어려운 이유는 구조가 없기 때문입니다. 어떤 주제에도 적용 가능한 두 가지 틀로 빠르게 작성해 보세요.

1) Problem–Solution Essay (문제 해결형)
Use this when the prompt asks about an issue, cause, or ways to improve.
다음과 같은 질문에 적합합니다: 문제/원인/개선 방안 제시.
Outline:
- Intro (Problem statement) — Define the problem briefly. → 문제를 한두 문장으로 명확히.
- Cause 1 → Solution 1 — Link with 그래서/따라서. → 원인1과 해결책1을 같이 작성.
- Cause 2 → Solution 2 — Add a concrete example/data. → 예시나 간단한 데이터 포함.
- Recommendation — Choose the best solution and say why. → 최선의 대안을 선택·이유 제시.
- Conclusion — Restate benefit & expected result. → 기대 효과를 다시 한 번.
Sentence Starters (plug & play):
The main problem is that… 가장 큰 문제는 … 입니다.
This happens mainly because… 이 현상은 주로 … 때문에 발생합니다.
To address this, we should… 이를 해결하기 위해 … 해야 합니다.
For example, … 예를 들어, …
Among the options, the most effective is… because… 여러 방안 중 가장 효과적인 것은 … 입니다. 그 이유는 … 입니다.
Mini Model (topic: food waste at school)
Food waste is increasing in many schools. The main cause is fixed menus that ignore students’ preferences. Therefore, schools should run weekly choice days and allow smaller portions first. As a result, students select what they can finish, and waste decreases.
많은 학교에서 음식물 쓰레기가 늘고 있습니다. 주된 원인은 학생 선호를 고려하지 않는 고정 메뉴입니다. 따라서 주간 선택의 날을 운영하고, 처음에는 소량 배식을 해야 합니다. 그 결과 학생들이 먹을 수 있는 만큼만 선택하여 폐기량이 줄어듭니다.
👩🏫 Teacher’s Tips — Problem–Solution
- Pair every cause with a fix. 1:1 matching keeps logic clean. 원인마다 해결책을 같이 제시하면 논리가 더욱 깔끔합니다.
- Prefer concrete verbs to adjectives. “reduce waste by separating leftovers” beats “be eco-friendly.” 추상형용사보다 구체적인 동사가 점수에 유리합니다.
- Numbers win. Even a small estimate (“~20%”) signals clarity. 대략적인 수치를 글에 언급하여 명확성을 높입니다.
2) Opinion Essay (의견 제시형)
Use this when the prompt asks you to agree/disagree or choose A or B.
찬성/반대, 선택(A/B)을 요구하는 문제에 적합합니다.
Outline (PEEL x 5-para):
- Intro — State your position clearly. → 입장을 명확히.
- Reason 1 (Point → Example → Explanation → Link). → 논거1(주장-예-설명-연결).
- Reason 2 (PEEL). → 논거2(PEEL).
- Counterpoint + Rebuttal. → 반론 제시 후 반박.
- Conclusion — Restate position + practical suggestion. → 입장 재확인 + 실행 제안.
Sentence Starters:
I agree that… because… 저는 …에 찬성합니다. 그 이유는 …입니다.
First, … 첫째, …
Second, … 둘째, …
Some people argue that…, however… 일부는 …라고 주장하지만, …입니다.
Therefore, we should… 따라서 …해야 합니다.
Mini Model (topic: remote work)
I agree that remote work should be allowed for office jobs. First, it saves commuting time, so employees can start their day with more energy. Second, companies can hire talent from different cities, which improves team skills. Some say teamwork gets weaker; however, weekly video stand-ups and shared goals solve this. Therefore, a hybrid system is the best choice.
사무직에서 재택근무를 허용해야 한다는 의견에 찬성합니다. 첫째, 통근 시간을 절약해 에너지를 아낄 수 있습니다. 둘째, 다른 지역 인재를 채용해 팀 역량이 좋아집니다. 팀워크가 약해진다는 주장도 있지만, 주간 화상 회의와 공동 목표 설정으로 해결됩니다. 따라서 하이브리드 방식이 가장 적절합니다.
👩🏫 Teacher’s Tips — Opinion
- Choose a side fast. The exam rewards clarity, not perfect truth. 정답이 아닌 명확성이 점수입니다.
- Parallel reasons. Start paragraphs with “First/Second.” 문단 첫 문장을 평행 구조로.
- Counter + fix. Mention the strongest objection and show a practical solution. 강한 반론을 제시하고 해결책 제안.
3) Timing Strategy (타이밍 전략)
Assuming ~50 minutes for the writing section (confirm on test day), use a simple split:
Read + outline
Write both bodies
Intro/Conclusion + check
시험 시간(약 50분 가정, 당일 안내 확인)에 맞춰 계획→작성→검토로 단순하게 나누세요.
4) What do averages look like?
Officially: NIIED does not publish a single consolidated “average by section” table for every session on its website. However, your individual score report shows your cohort’s average alongside your scores (labeled “average of test group”). You can check this on the official result/score-certificate pages: NIIED TOPIK overview / TOPIK result portal.
Indicative (unofficial): Recent test-taker reports have mentioned session averages around Listening 57.48, Writing 33.85, Reading 54.83 for TOPIK II—suggesting that Writing often scores the lowest. Treat these numbers as anecdotal guidance, not an official benchmark.

5) Try This Now — 10-Minute Drill
Pick one topic (smartphones at school / city bike program). Outline both styles in bullets—no full sentences.
주제를 하나 고르고(학교 스마트폰 / 시 공공자전거), 두 가지 형식으로 불릿 아웃라인만 작성하세요.
- Problem–Solution: problem → cause1/solution1 → cause2/solution2 → recommendation.
- Opinion: position → reason1 → reason2 → counter+fix → conclusion.
6) Quick Checklist
- Clear thesis in the first 2–3 lines. 서론에서 입장/문제 명확화.
- Each body starts with a topic sentence. 본문 첫 문장=핵심 주장.
- Use one connector per sentence on average. 문장당 연결어 남용 금지.
- Finish with benefit or action. 결론=효과/실행.
- Leave 5–10% time to proofread particles/spacing. 마지막 검토 시간 확보.
