🏫 Teacher's Note: The Tale of Two Students
As an Italki teacher, I've met hundreds of students. Let me tell you about two of them.
Student A speaks perfect Korean grammar but treats everyone like a friend, using "Hey" or casual speech too early. Koreans are polite to him, but he feels lonely. He says, "Koreans are distant."
Student B makes grammar mistakes, but she knows how to bow 90 degrees to elders and calls her older acquaintances "Unni" (Big sister). Koreans love her. They invite her to dinner and help her with everything.
The difference? Student B accepted the Korean Social Contract.
❤️ The Choice is Yours: Stranger vs. Family
Living as a permanent "stranger" is a choice. I respect that choice. It is comfortable to stay in your own bubble.
But if you truly want to understand Jeong (정, Korean deep affection) and warmth, YOU must take the first step.
Koreans are often shy with foreigners. They are waiting for a signal that you are open to their culture. If your goal is to get a job in Korea, make true friends, or master the language, there is absolutely no reason not to start following these rules. It is the key that unlocks every door.
✨ The Magic Word: "Hyung / Nuna"
Here is a secret hack. If you meet a Korean who is just 1 or 2 years older than you, and you've met them a few times, try asking:
"Can I call you Hyung (or Nuna/Oppa/Unni)?"
(제가 형이라고 불러도 될까요? / Je-ga Hyung-i-ra-go bul-leo-do doel-kka-yo?)
The moment a foreigner uses these family titles, the wall collapses. You are no longer a "Foreign Customer." You become a "Younger Sibling."
Reaction you will get: They will be surprised, laugh, and suddenly treat you with much more warmth. You might even get free service at their restaurant!
🌍 "I'm not in Korea..." (Yes, You Are!)
Are you thinking, "I live in Texas (or London), so this doesn't apply to me"? Wrong.
Actually, this is the #1 Homework I give to my students who live outside of Korea. Here is your mission:

- Go to a Korean restaurant or Asian market in your city.
- Find a Korean staff member or owner.
- Say this magic sentence: "저는 한국어 공부하고 있어요. 한국 문화 너무 좋아요." (I am studying Korean. I love Korean culture so much.)
Why does this work?
Koreans living abroad often feel a strong sense of pride (patriotism) and nostalgia. When they see a foreigner making an effort to learn their language, they don't just see a customer—they feel National Pride (자긍심).
They will likely become your warmest supporters and free Korean tutors. There is no better opportunity to practice Korean for free than with a proud Korean expat who is happy to see you.

Ready to score big points? Try these missions this week.
Mission 1: The Landlord & Security Guard
Don't just nod. Stop, bow slightly, and say: "안녕하세요! 식사 하셨어요?" (Did you have a meal?)
Mission 2: The Shop Owner
If the owner is older, use the title 'Sajang-nim' (Boss/Owner) with a bow.
- Try: "사장님, 이거 얼마예요? 날씨가 춥죠?" (Boss, how much is this? The weather is cold, right?)
- Result: You might find an extra banana in your bag next time.
